South Haven City Hall
Company Name:
South Haven City Hall
Location:
South Haven
The furniture project for South Haven (MI) City Hall began in the usual way. Competitive bids were submitted by companies such as Steelcase, Herman Miller, Room2Work, and others. "The bids were extremely close," says Joe Guilford, project manager.
Then the project took an unusual turn –several of them, in fact.
Renovating the existing municipal office building meant new furniture would have to work in offices of various dimensions and layouts. Customized workstations would need to fit around fixtures such as old radiators. "Everyone here has their own unique office," says Joe. "There probably aren't any two alike."
The competition couldn't customize their furniture like Room2Work. "Your furniture was totally customizable. We were able to measure the size of each space. Then each person could help design their office and how they wanted to work. That's how the furniture was ordered and built."
The furniture South Haven selected was Office 425 casegoods and Rove tables. Orders for what other companies call "specials", such as custom sizes, and workstations that required special legs, were business as usual for Room2Work.
Joe, however, had never handled a furniture project. As the Information Services Director he deals with technology issues such as data and phone lines, and cable TV. "There were massive amounts of wring to pull, moving computer hardware, all of that. I was so involved in the renovation that my boss said 'why don't you do the whole project.'"
Fortunately, Joe had some help: his boss, who helped with the plans and drawings, and a company that provided furniture that fit the bill –and each and every workspace.
