"We're a government agency, and that means we can only do this once," says Gloria Steiner, "which means it has to be functional, and it has to last. It has to be done right the first time."
"Right" meant Room2Work, for the new staff training facility for the Stark County Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities in Canton, Ohio. They serve people with mental retardation and other developmental disabilities, and provide valuable vocational and educational programs for all ages. That kind of commitment requires skilled staff, which in turn requires continuing education.
"We have training sessions that last from two hours to a full day. Staff orientation classes can last a couple of days. It's important that people be comfortable working for long periods of time. Some classes require computers, so we have to accommodate technology, too."
The solution is a well-tailored ensemble of new R2W products: Flip-Top tables on one side of the room, and Two-Step tables on the other, along with high-cush, supportive Sinclair Executive leather task chairs fitted with 6-directional adjustable arms.
The Flip-Top 24 X 48 table is a classic, durable training table (here spec'd with casters) that comes with a hinged top. The top flips up, and the tables then nest together for convenient storage. The line also features a 30-degree wedge-shaped work surface called -what else- the Wedge, that quick-connects to create a variety of table configurations, while retaining a completely contiguous worksurface. "We've already rearranged them several times," says Gloria. "The wedge works great, and it's really easy to use. Everything's on casters, so you wheel things around, and set them up fast. It's wonderful."
The 72" wide Two-Step table features a two-tiered work surface. The rear work surface, 5" lower than the front work surface, holds computer monitors at optimum viewing height. This eliminates the awkward head nodding and refocusing as users move between keyboard, monitor, and other materials. An 8-inch modesty panel, rear work surface cable trough, and sturdy laminate work surface, are all standard on the Two-Step. Options include wire management grommets and a lower shelf. Two-Step is available in widths from 36 to 72 inches.
Sinclair Executive Seating provides long-term seated comfort, with genuine leather upholstery, a extra large cushioned seat that locks upright or in a tilted position, an equally generous mid-back, firm lumber support, tilt tension, and soft, durable polyurethane armrests. Sinclair is ideal for computer work, with adjustments in 6 directions: the armrests move up or down, forward or back, and pivot left or right. Seat height moves at a touch of the pneumatic control. Sinclair rests on a sturdy five-star base with dual wheel casters. It's designed to last, too, and holds users up to 250 pounds.
"We wanted leather," notes Gloria, manager of Information Systems at Stark MRDD, "because the chairs have to be durable and easy to clean. They will get a lot of use and need to last for a long time. They're ergonomically designed, you can adjust them any way you want. They're so comfortable, everyone loves these chairs."
She initially shopped locally for furniture. "I went to some local places, but I didn't get the type of service I got with Room2Work. They were very knowledgeable, very accommodating. It was just a great experience working with Room2Work.
